GDPR, Law & Ethics

iMARS has a strong commitment to ensuring that the outcome of our project – and the way we conduct our research – are fully ethical and legal. Our goal is to develop solutions to a real threat, without compromising citizens’ rights.

iMARS has a strong commitment to ensuring that the outcome of our project – and the way we conduct our research – are fully ethical and legal. Our goal is to develop solutions to a real threat, without compromising citizens’ rights.

To achieve this, iMARS has involved internal and external experts for independent checks and safety mechanisms.

What are the laws?

iMARS strives to be fully in-line with EU fundamental rights and regulations. Some of the laws and regulations we are carefully studying and applying to our research and the solutions we hope to deliver are:

  • EU Charter.
  • Privacy and data protection legislation like the GDPR.
  • EUROSUR Handbook.
  • the Schengen Border Code.
  • ‘Smart Borders’ and interoperability regulations.

The legal team

iMARS has a team of 7 legal, ethical and security experts, some of which are partners in the projects and others are external, independent advisors, from organisations like Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Institute of Baltic Studies, Federal Criminal Police Office of Germany and Linköping University.

Their objective is to guide the project teams and ensure that all technical developments, lab tests, collections of data on sites and demonstrations comply with all existing regulations. Their contribution to the project will ensure that not only the iMARS solutions will respect legal, ethical, privacy and data protection requirements, they will equally be in accordance with societal expectations and will comply with the existing and proposed EU regulations on border control, ‘Smart Borders’ (Entry/Exit System) and recent legislative initiatives regarding existing large-scale databases and the strengthening of passports, ID cards and residence permits.
